Frequently Asked Questions
Where are the the photo sessions located?
Portrait sessions will be held at Tomato Lake Kewale, on the far side of the lake, when coming from the city.
Park in the Tomato Lake carpark located near the roundabout - corner of 170 President Street and Jeffrey Street.
What do I wear for my session? What do I need to bring?
General tips: The selection of clothing for your portrait is essential. If the clothing is noticeable or overbearing in a portrait, it can become a distraction. Dark clothing tends to be slimming. Try and tone down bright colours, as bright colours attract attention away from the face. When choosing lighter colours, stick to pastels. Pale yellow and pale blue work well, especially with jeans or khaki pants. These colours work great in nature. Light clothing can look great. White can look beautifully simple and fresh. White shirts and or blouses under a dark jacket work really well. Prints, patterns and logos are NOT recommended. Try and avoid prints of any kind and patterns. Avoid short sleeve clothing and short pants. Large or heavily noticeable accessories can be a major distraction. Minimal and straightforward works best.
Maternity - The aim is to show off the growing baby bump. A black or white button-down top in which the bottom area can be unbuttoned easily to expose your belly works best. Or a long flowing dress. Please encourage the father (and your children if you have others) to come along (they should also dress to match the mother) Bring along any props you wish to have in the photos, gifts, little shows, something to hint at the gender of the baby.
Family - Keep your clothing simple and coordinating. Avoid loud or busy patterns and large logos. Solid colours are best. Jeans are a timeless choice, and they're great for fun, casual pictures because they are flattering. Lighter shirts on top give the pictures a more casual and bright look. Black or other dark shirts on top give the portraits a more serious and thoughtful feel. Everyone should have colour-coordinated outfits (Not a uniform necessarily, but there should be a theme). For the children, choose outfits that fit well, not too baggy. Jeans/khaki and white or black tops are always very nice for a family portrait.
Newborn - My style is to keep these as natural as possible. See general tips if you wish to be in a few photos yourself. Wraps, headbands, hats work best. Have any special clothing or blankets ready if you wish to have them in the photos. If you would something more staged, flowers, baskets, please discuss your ideas prior.
Athlete Portraits - Wear what you would normally wear for competition, plus any other equipment you feel you would like to have in the photos, remember to mention sponsored gear if you are required to focus on this.
Business portrait - Wear what you would usually wear to work, uniform, better to dress more formal than casual. Ensure you present yourself as you wish to be seen in your images, how you normally would like to present yourself - beard or no beard, have your hair styled, up, down, freshly cut and so on. If you do not usually have a uniform, see general for tips on colours and styles.
Children's Portraits - Individual children's portraits. It is important to have the children wearing clothing as recommended in the family portrait clothing tips. I recommend, no large logos or branding, cartoon character images, this is a major distraction and can date the images. If you wish your child to have a change of clothing during the photo session, this is fine; however, I would limit it to 2-3 changes. Some props might work okay, hat, glasses or toy, should you like to try. This depends on the age and temperament of the child. I recommend bringing a favourite toy or promise of a treat usually works well to help with cooperation.
Engagement - See general tips.
Cake Smash - The main outfit that will probably get cake on it, a change of clothing for afterwards. It works best if the outfit matches the cake and colours of the session. The colour schemes I can provide are pink/green and blue/purple bunting and a few accessories. You will need to provide the cake, I have a glass cake stand that I provide if you wish. Other accessories that work well are optional but recommended are; balloons, bunting, streamers, bubbles.
